First-Time Umrah Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

WHAT IS UMRAH?

THE RITUALS OF UMRAH

Umrah consists of four essential acts:

1. Ihram — Entering the state of purity and worship Before crossing the Miqat (the designated boundary around Makkah), pilgrims must enter the state of Ihram. Men wear two seamless white garments. Women dress in modest clothing (any colour, with face and hands uncovered). The pilgrim makes the intention for Umrah and recites the Talbiyah: “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk…”
2. Tawaf — Circumambulating the Kaaba Upon arrival in Masjid Al-Haram, pilgrims perform Tawaf — walking seven times around the Kaaba in an anti-clockwise direction. This is performed in a state of wudu (ritual purity), and pilgrims recite supplications throughout.
3. Sa’i — Walking between Safa and Marwa After Tawaf, pilgrims perform Sa’i — walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating the actions of Hajar (wife of Prophet Ibrahim) as she searched for water for her son Ismail.
4. Halq or Taqsir — Cutting or shaving the hair To exit the state of Ihram, men shave their heads (Halq) or trim their hair (Taqsir). Women trim a small portion of hair. This marks the completion of Umrah.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

All pilgrims require an Umrah visa to enter Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage purposes. Key points to know:

• Umrah visas are separate from regular Saudi tourist visas

BEST TIME TO PERFORM UMRAH
